October 12, 1986This was Columbus Day weekend signaling the end of our first hiking season. Cousins Paul and Chris joined us on this day. The original plan was to climb something from the Garden, but finding that parking lot full, we quickly made other plans. The decision was to drive to Adirondack Loj and climb Colden. It may well have been past noon by the time we hit the trail. The hike through to the south end of Avalanche Lake was incredible. On the way up Colden, conditions worsened as a thin layer of ice began to coat the trail. Considering our late start and our slow progress along the icy trail, daylight became an issue. Luckily we brought flashlights and eventually made our way back to an excellent spaghetti dinner in the back of the truck.
